  • GWM Malaysia to showcase Tank 300 and Haval H6 Hybrid SUVs at Malaysia Autoshow 2024 next week

GWM Malaysia to showcase Tank 300 and Haval H6 Hybrid SUVs at Malaysia Autoshow 2024 next week

In a post on its Facebook page, Great Wall Motor Malaysia has indicated that it will be showcasing the GWM Tank 300 and the Haval H6 Hybrid at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024, which takes place next week. Both vehicles have been previewed in the past, but this is the first time that they will be displayed to the public.

Initially slated to arrive here in Q3, the Tank 300’s Malaysian introduction has now been pushed up to Q2, which means that its market debut should be very soon, possibly even at the show itself. It is expected that we will be getting the non-hybrid 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine version of the boxy-looking off-road SUV.

Here, the powertrain offers 220 PS (217 hp or 162 kW) and 380 Nm in the way of output, and delivers drive via an eight-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system, the latter with 2H, 4H, 4L functions as well as front and rear differential locks. Earlier this month, GWM Malaysia offered an estimated pricing for the Tank 300, with the model expected to retail for around RM258,000.

As for the Haval H6 Hybrid, expect to see what should be the definite iteration for our market at the event. It was previewed here last year, but according to GWM Malaysia, the units shown then were not representative of the final version, with the actual kit and trim for Malaysia being that seen on RHD examples presented for viewing in China recently.

Specifications aren’t expected to differ much from that outlined during the 2023 preview, and so the H6 Hybrid will be powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine offering 150 PS (148 hp or 110 kW) and 230 Nm of torque, working in combination with an electric motor rated at 177 PS (174 hp or 130 kW) and 300 Nm to offer a total system output of 243 PS (240 hp or 179 kW) and 530 Nm, delivered to the wheels via the automaker’s two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).

There has been no indicative pricing as yet for the H6 HEV, but there should be some clarity on this next week when it makes its first public showing. The H6 Hybrid was originally supposed to debut here in Q2 this year, but its introduction has now been pushed back to Q3. The SUV will go on sale here as a fully-imported (CBU) model initially, but CKD local assembly is set to follow at EP Manufacturing’s (EPMB) plant in Melaka.

Another tree falls along Jalan Pinang, hits parked cars – road closed, Special Perils insurance recommended

Another week, another tree has fallen in downtown Kuala Lumpur amidst a heavy thunderstorm, this time along Jalan Pinang near the Petronas Twin Towers. Videos show the large tree lying on the ground, hitting several cars parked within the One KL condominium compound next to Mandarin Oriental and extending outwards onto the road proper.

The road has since been temporarily closed, according to Astro Radio Traffic, leading to slow traffic out of the KLCC area; there are no reports of injuries so far. This comes after a fallen tree on Jalan Sultan Ismail struck 17 vehicles on the road last Tuesday, causing one death.

As usual, we remind you to plan your routes using navigation apps with real-time traffic data, such as Waze and Google Maps, and to stay safe on the roads. If it’s at all possible, delay your journey to avoid congestion. Heavy rain also often causes flooding, so that’s something to look out for and avoid as well.

The incident is also a timely reminder to have the Special Perils add-on for your vehicle insurance policy in the event your vehicle ends up struck by fallen trees or brqanches; while it does cost more, it is a small additional amount compared to the potential repair costs should a vehicle end up damaged.

  • BMW teases G60 5 Series ICE and new Countryman for Malaysia Autoshow 2024 – BMW Motorrad models too

BMW teases G60 5 Series ICE and new Countryman for Malaysia Autoshow 2024 – BMW Motorrad models too

BMW Malaysia has teased several vehicles that are set to be present at the upcoming Malaysia Autoshow 2024 next week. In an Instagram story posted by the company, we get to see the silhouettes of these vehicles, some of which we can clearly make out (with some editing).

A total of 10 vehicles were teased in the 50-second video, with the first two being appearing to be the latest U11 X1 and U10 X2. The former is currently offered with two fully electric powertrains (iX1) as well as a sole internal combustion engine (ICE) variant, while the latter is available exclusively with electric-only power in the form of the iX2.

Moving on, vehicle number three appears to be the standard G60 5 Series presumably with an ICE (or plug-in hybrid tech), which would be new to our market. The G60 was initially launched here in last November in i5 guise, which is the EV version of the 5er that is very clearly vehicle four in the teaser.

As for vehicles five and six, we can make them out to be the third-generation (U25) MINI Countryman that made its global debut in September 2023. Identifying design cues include the crossover’s angular headlamps and distinctive trim piece on the C-pillars. The Countryman is available as a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or with an ICE, and we could see both at the event.

The remaining four vehicles teased are BMW Motorrad models and include the fully electric CE 02 as well as what appears to be the S 1000 XR, M 1000 XR and F 900 XR. With so many models teased, there’s plenty to look forward to from BMW Malaysia, so stay tuned.

  • AXCR 2024: Malaysia leg of rally cancelled due to heightened security risk, to proceed within Thailand

AXCR 2024: Malaysia leg of rally cancelled due to heightened security risk, to proceed within Thailand

The organiser of the 2024 Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR 2024) has announced that the Malaysia leg of this year’s rally will be cancelled due to safety concerns, and the event will proceed in Thailand.

“With recent developments at the border, the Thai authorities have identified safety of the convoy would be at risk. Ensuring the safety and security of all participants, attendees, staff, and supporting authorities involved in AXCR is of the organiser’s utmost priority. After careful consideration and consultation, we have concluded that the prudent course of action is to cancel the Malaysia leg event,” read the statement by the organiser.

The safety reasons for the cancellation were not explicitly stated by the organiser of AXCR, however the most recent security issue in the region was the May 6 bombing in the Narathiwat province of southern Thailand, resulting in two Malaysians injured, according to the Malaysian ministry of foreign affairs. The two have since received outpatient treatment, and have been discharged from hospital.

Originally to take place across borders, AXCR 2024 was initially to begin in Surat Thani and head towards Trang, before entering Malaysia in Leg 4 via Bukit Kayu Hitam in Perlis, and travel onwards to Pulau Pinang. Legs 5 and 6 were to traverse Ipoh before arriving at the finish in Kuala Lumpur.

Next-gen Mazda CX-5 to get in-house developed hybrid tech – brand to launch dedicated EV platform in 2027

The next-generation Mazda CX-5 has been confirmed and will keep its name (there were rumours the SUV would be renamed to the CX-40) as well as use hybrid technology developed in-house, the carmaker revealed in its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024. This is just one of a few initiatives that the company is planning as part of its electrification strategy, as revealed in a presentation document.

In said document, Mazda said that it has a “plan to equip next CX-5 with a Mazda-developed hybrid engine.” This will form a line-up of products leveraging multi-electrification technology, which currently includes hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the its Large Product group that includes the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90.

The current, second-generation CX-5 is currently offered with mild hybrid technology branded M Hybrid which uses a belt-driven integrated starter generator (ISG) and lithium-ion battery to assist the engine. However, this system cannot be driven on electric power alone, unlike full hybrids like those from Toyota and Honda.

The CX-50 will also be offered with hybrid power in the United States in the second half of 2024, although this will use technology developed by Toyota, which is already being sold in China since last April.

Mazda also said it has launched its electrification business division called e-Mazda and plans to introduce a battery electric vehicle (BEV) based on its first BEV-dedicated platform in 2027. No details were provided in the presentation on either the next-generation CX-5 hybrid or BEV.

  • BP to purchase Tesla Supercharger sites in United States; plans to invest RM4.75 billion in expansion

BP to purchase Tesla Supercharger sites in United States; plans to invest RM4.75 billion in expansion

The EV charging business unit of BP, BP Pulse is keen to expand its network in the United States following Tesla’s disbanding of its Supercharger team, Reuters has reported. Last year, British petroleum giant BP has announced that its EV charging business, BP Pulse will purchase Tesla Superchargers for deployment on an independent EV charging network.

The deal with BP Pulse is part of the British petroleum firm’s plans to invest up to US$1 billion (RM4.75 billion) in EV charging operations across the United States by 2030, and BP Pulse has installed more than 27,000 charging points to date, with 100,000 charging points targeted for roll-out by 2030, according to BP.

“We are aggressively looking to acquire real estate to scale our network, which is a heightened focus following the recent Tesla announcement,” a BP spokesperson said in a statement, according to Reuters.

BP to purchase Tesla Supercharger sites in United States; plans to invest RM4.75 billion in expansion

This comes after Tesla was revealed to be laying off more than 10% of its global workforce, with the job cuts to affect around 14,000 persons, according to the New York Times last month.

Last October, BP placed an order for Tesla chargers worth US$100 million (RM475 million), though BP itself had also cut its EV charging business workforce by 10% and withdrew from several markets as commercial EV fleets did not grow as rapidly as predicted, Reuters cited company sources as saying.

These will be 250 kW DC chargers branded as BP Pulse units, and will use the Tesla Magic Dock that is compatible with both Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) charging connectors, according to the report.

  • Johor government to go with autonomous rapid transit (ART) for Johor Bahru due to lower cost than LRT

Johor government to go with autonomous rapid transit (ART) for Johor Bahru due to lower cost than LRT

    Sarawak’s hydrogen-powered ART system

According to a report by Bernama, the Johor state government is opting to build an autonomous rapid transit (ART) system in Johor Bahru instead of a light rail transit (LRT) proposed initially due to cost considerations

State executive councillor Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the ART system is estimated to cost RM7 billion, which is less than the LRT that would cost RM16.7 billion. He added that these valuations were based on an analysis comparing the two transport systems after a presentation by two consortia proposing the projects.

At a recent 15th Johor legislative assembly (DUN) meeting, Fazli said the LRT system required a new design for the elevated section in addition to requiring the approval of the railway scheme. “For the infrastructure of depots and LRT stations, it requires the acquisition of land for the depot in Desa Jaya and the acquisition of five acres of land for the track for switching/shunting,” he added.

In addition to cost, another consideration of the state government is to have the transport system be developed and completed by the end of December 2026, coinciding with the start date of the rapid transit system (RTS) operation that links Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru to Woodlands, Singapore.

“Congestion will occur at the Bukit Chagar RTS station if the passenger dispersal service is not completed in line with the start of RTS operations. Thus, the state government supports the proposed construction of an elevated ART to be developed in Johor Bahru to replace the bus rapid transit (BRT) that was cancelled by the federal government earlier,” said Mohamad Fazli.

  • 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance in Malaysia – 460 hp, 0-100 km/h in 3.1 secs, 528 km range, from RM244k

    2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance in Malaysia – 460 hp, 0-100 km/h in 3.1 secs, 528 km range, from RM244k

Less than a month after its reveal, the new Tesla Model 3 Performance has now made its Malaysian debut at the Tesla Experience Centre Cyberjaya. This more athletic version of the facelifted Highland model represents something of a bargain, priced from just RM243,700 on-the-road without insurance (RM242,000 nett, plus a RM1,000 order fee, a RM500 delivery and admin fee, and a RM200 number plate fee).

For that, you get an uprated dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain that produces 460 hp. That’s somewhat down on the US, where the Model 3 Performance is available with up to 510 hp, reportedly due to a larger 82 kWh Panasonic battery (versus the smaller 79 kWh LG pack we allegedly get).

    2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance in Malaysia – 460 hp, 0-100 km/h in 3.1 secs, 528 km range, from RM244k

Still, that’s enough for it to get from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds – with a one-foot rollout subtracted, of course, as is typical of Tesla. Top speed is rated at 261 km/h, while its WLTP-rated range is quoted at 528 km, versus 513 km for the rear-wheel-drive model and 629 km for the AWD Long Range.

To harness the extra, um, performance, the Model 3 Performance now comes with adaptive dampers for the first time, along with new springs, bushings and anti-roll bars, lowering the ride height by 10 mm. This works in concert with the latest Track Mode V3 that features all-new calibration for the motors and dampers, plus a drift mode and the ability to adjust the stability control intervention and the torque split between the front and rear wheels (now labeled Understeer to Oversteer).

    2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance in Malaysia – 460 hp, 0-100 km/h in 3.1 secs, 528 km range, from RM244k

Visually, the Model 3 Performance is as per the Highland model with its slimmer headlights and C-shaped taillights. However, you now get new bumpers to help differentiate it from the cooking models, incorporating air curtain inlets and a new splitter at the front, along with a subtle rear diffuser.

This is in addition to the usual Performance tweaks such as the all-black exterior trim and a carbon fibre rear lip spoiler. You also receive larger brakes with red callipers to ensure that the car is able to stop just as fast as it can accelerate, hidden behind 20-inch “Warp” forged black alloy wheels wrapped in staggered Pirelli P Zero Elect tyres that measure 235/35R20 at the front and 275/30R20 at the rear.

Inside, the Performance is enhanced with carbon fibre trim, alloy pedals and new, heavily-bolstered sports seats with integrated headrests and no rear pockets – these feature a new hyperspace “Performance” graphic also seen on the new rear badge. Beyond that, the car is identical to the regular Highland, coming with a new three-spoke steering wheel, no indicator and wiper stalks, a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen and an eight-inch rear touchscreen.

This being a Tesla, there are a range of costly options, including paint – anything other than the standard Pearl White costs between RM5,000 to an eye-watering RM11,000 for the new Ultra Red, while a white interior is an additional RM5,000. There’s also the RM16,000 Enhanced Autopilot package and the infamous (and currently non-functional) RM32,000 Full Self Driving pack.

  • Perodua hybrid tech to be at Malaysia Autoshow 2024?

Perodua hybrid tech to be at Malaysia Autoshow 2024?

The upcoming Malaysia Autoshow 2024 will feature Perodua at the event, and a promotional image suggests that the national carmaker is set to bring a hybrid powertrain technology display to the show.

While the presence of a hybrid model among Perodua’s line-up of models was represented by the Ativa Hybrid, that was essentially a rebadged Daihatsu Rocky e-Smart Hybrid that was being trialled on a subscription basis.

The carmaker has previously stated that its first hybrid will be launched as variant in a full model change, which rules out the aforementioned Ativa as the crossover premiered in 2021, and a next-gen model will be some way off. The Myvi, too, is fairly recent in its facelift, which was launched late-2021, and the Axia is even newer.

Daihatsu Rocky e-Smart Hybrid powertrain (left); Malaysia Autoshow 2024 promotional image (right)

Its use of a hatchback shape for the hybrid technology showcase would likely take a more generic form rather than one that it model-specific, though if we were to deduce from the image here, the technology display could represent a system with a battery pack that takes up more of the floor, and is therefore considerably larger than that of the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid.

Another possibility is the B-segment SUV codenamed D66B, which is closely related to the Toyota Yaris Cross, being a Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA)-based model. This has been recently tipped for a Malaysian launch in April, which has come and gone, though this model also fits the hybrid billing.

A hybrid variant is available in Indonesia, which packs a 2NR-VEX 1.5 litre NA four-cylinder with 91 PS (90 hp or 67 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 121 Nm from 4,000 to 4,800 rpm and an electric traction motor that is rated at 80 PS (79 hp or 59 kW) and 141 Nm.

  • Investigative report on allegations of classic license plate regs made in JPJandora Papers ready – Loke

Investigative report on allegations of classic license plate regs made in JPJandora Papers ready – Loke

Last September, the transport ministry announced the establishment of a special task force to look into allegations made in the JPJandora Papers, in which misconduct at the road transport department (JPJ) related to the registration of classic vehicle licence plates was highlighted.

In the 28-page document, which was released into the public domain via a Telegram app group, a list of number plates by year since 2007 and by state were shown to have been allegedly revived and registered for ownership. The document claimed that these were sold at a very good price, either to individuals or companies, with the activity said to be orchestrated by JPJ officials.

According to transport minister Anthony Loke, the investigation report by the task force is now ready, and is set to be submitted to the ministry’s secretary-general for review and further action, as Bernama reports.

He said several weaknesses had been identified, especially concerning registering classic number plates. “These classic numbers were previously registered without a transparent and detailed system because registrations were done manually in the 50s and 60s, without using a computer system or application like MySikap,” he said.

“Sometimes, when these numbers were registered, it was assumed that no one owned them. However, the real owner would later come forward to reclaim the number. This raises doubts about our system. To prevent ownership conflicts in the future, we need to tighten and control the registration process,” he stated.

  • Electrified vehicle sales in Malaysia at nearly 11,000 units, 268 new EV charging stations as of March 2024

Electrified vehicle sales in Malaysia at nearly 11,000 units, 268 new EV charging stations as of March 2024

Following a meeting involving the Malaysian national EV steering committee (NEVSC), minister of international trade and industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz took to social media to provide an update on the local EV ecosystem.

According to the MITI minister, sales of electrified vehicles reached nearly 11,000 units in the first three months of 2024. However, said figure includes both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) as well as hybrids, and it’s not mentioned what’s the split. For context, EV-only sales amounted to 13,257 units last year, with the total number of EVs on Malaysian roads being 16,763 units.

As for charging infrastructure, Zafrul said around 268 new charging stations began operations this year, which brings the total number of EV charging bays as at the end of March to 2,288 units. He added that the ministry is maintaining its target of having 10,000 charging stations across the country by 2025, although the targeted number of DC fast chargers within this total has been increased from 1,000 to 1,500 units.

The committee also discussed the concept of “battery EV passports” where each battery is required to have a form of identification as part of a battery end-of-life strategy. This is to make them easily traceable for the purpose of recycling as part of a circular economy, which will also involve the recycling of the rest of the vehicle.

In his social media postings, Zafrul said there are more initiatives that can be carried out to further improve the local ecosystem.

  • Ride-hailing price bidding system never approved by transport ministry, APAD to investigate matter – Loke

Ride-hailing price bidding system never approved by transport ministry, APAD to investigate matter – Loke

Transport minister Anthony Loke says that the transport ministry has never given the approval for any ride-hailing service provider to utilise a price bidding system for passenger fares, and providers were not allowed to do so, Bernama reports.

He said the ministry was unaware of the matter, but has instructed the land public transport agency (APAD) to to investigate the system’s usage among ride-hailing drivers. “The agency will look into this, and as far as I know, we haven’t approved any such system,” he said.

The issue has come about following a growing popularity of ride-hailing applications utilising a bidding system for fares, where ride-hailing drivers can set their own prices for a journey before customers bid on the fare, provided they are agreeable to the fare.

However, the system has raised concerns among public transport service users, as it would lead to passengers paying higher fares for their rides. It has also led to those representing ride-hailing drivers calling on the government to regulate fare prices, stating that the price bidding format is not a solution to protect drivers’ interests.

  • Malaysians caught in viral video cooking Maggi with portable stoves at a petrol station – don’t ever do this

Malaysians caught in viral video cooking Maggi with portable stoves at a petrol station – don’t ever do this

There are a number of safety rules to follow when you’re at a petrol station. The most obvious is not to smoke, use a lighter, light a match or start an open flame because petrol is a volatile, highly flammable liquid that gives off vapours, which are also flammable.

However, it looks like there are still those that can’t seem to follow this simple rule. Recently, a video went viral on social media showing a group of people having a literal cookout at a Petron station near Genting Highlands.

In the video, we can see a few of the cookout attendees preparing Maggi instant noodles and other foods on portable stoves and having a fun time, not knowing that they are putting themselves and others in danger.

Suffice to say, this is something you should absolutely not do. A fire at a petrol station is scary and can result in loss of life. Reduce the possibility of mishaps by following the rules and not have or do anything that may start a fire.
