    BYD Shark revealed – Hilux-rivalling PHEV pick-up, over 430 hp, 0-100 km/h 5.7 secs, 100 km EV range

The first pick-up truck from BYD is set to be launched globally in just a few hours, but the Chinese carmaker has already released initial photos and preliminary information about the pick-up truck – now christened the Shark – on its Mexican website. The lifestyle double cab model is unique in that it’s powered by a plug-in hybrid system – the same first seen in the related Bao Leopard 5 SUV.

The powertrain in question is the Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) Super Hybrid, led by a 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with dual electric motors – one on each axle. This is claimed to be the first “longitudinal electric hybrid system” (whatever that means).

Not much has been released in the way of technical details, but it’s been revealed the truck makes around 250 hp less than the Leopard 5, producing just over 430 hp – still enough, mind, to get it from zero to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.5 litres per 100 km, while the claimed pure electric range is 100 km on the NEDC cycle, contributing to a total range of 840 km. The unspecified Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery can be charged via a DC fast charger from 30 to 80% in 20 minutes.

    BYD Shark revealed – Hilux-rivalling PHEV pick-up, over 430 hp, 0-100 km/h 5.7 secs, 100 km EV range

Like the Leopard 5, the Shark is built on a proper ladder frame chassis – with an integrated battery – and uses independent double wishbone suspension front and rear. The bed has a capacity of 1,450 litres and a payload rating of 835 kg, while the truck itself has a maximum towing capacity is 2,500 kg.

Claimed to be the largest model in the one-tonne class, the Shark measures 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide and 1,925 mm tall, making it a massive 132 mm longer, 71 mm wider and 110 mm taller than the Toyota Hilux it competes against. Its 3,260 mm wheelbase is also 175 mm longer.

On the outside, the Shark carries the usual pick-up styling tropes, all boxy and upright with chunky fender flares and features such as the very Ford F-150 Lightning-like vertical headlights, full-width front and rear lighting signatures and ginormous BYD badge on the grille. Roof rails, a wraparound windscreen design and a rather crude-looking sports bar are also present, as are 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels.

    BYD Shark revealed – Hilux-rivalling PHEV pick-up, over 430 hp, 0-100 km/h 5.7 secs, 100 km EV range

Inside, the Shark borrows plenty from the Leopard 5, including steering wheel-mounted drive and powertrain mode switches, a low and wide gear selector and a row of chunky switches aft of it. The dashboard design, however, is slightly different, consisting of large interlocking H patterns.

The tech is typical BYD and includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a novel 12.8-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen from the Dolphin. You also get “Hi BYD” voice control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an in-car karaoke function (a microphone accessory is sold separately), a smartphone digital key, a 360-degree camera (inclusive of a Land Rover-style “transparent bonnet” function) and a 12-inch head-up display.

Safety-wise, the Shark is fitted with six airbags and can be specified with a full range of driver assists. These include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, rear collision warning, blind spot warning with collision prevention and rear cross traffic alert with auto brake.

2024 Isuzu D-Max facelift launched in Malaysia – five variants; 1.9L, 3.0L turbodiesels; priced from RM99k

Isuzu Malaysia today launched the new D-Max facelift which continues to be offered in five variants, all of which are fully imported (CBU) from Thailand. The refreshed pick-up truck features an updated design and kit list, but maintains the same two inline-four turbodiesel engines as before.

The returning engines are the 4JJ3-TCX 3.0 litre with 190 PS at 3,600 rpm and 450 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,600 rpm as well as the RZ4E-TC 1.9 litre making 150 PS at 3,600 rpm and 350 Nm from 1,800 to 2,600 rpm.

These engines are paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, with all variants having four-wheel drive as standard except for the Auto Plus. A rear differential lock is standard with all four-wheel drive variants too – more on the variants and pricing below.

For 2024, the engines are now compliant with the Euro 4 emissions standard with the addition of a diesel particulate filter (DPF). There’s also a new ‘Rough Terrain Mode’ that is standard on Premium and X-Terrain variants and can be engaged via a dedicated button on the centre console. The function uses the traction control system and brakes to help traverse rougher terrain and can be used in 2H, 4H and 4L.

The D-Max line-up starts with the Single Cab before moving on to four double-cab options (Standard, Auto Plus, Premium and X-Terrain). In total, there are eight variant/powertrain configurations available for the D-Max, and here’s how much they cost on-the-road without insurance:

    Single Cab

    • 1.9L 4×4 MT: RM98,949.20
    • 3.0L 4×4 MT: RM105,888.40

    Standard

    • 1.9L 4×4 MT: RM109,599.20
    • 1.9L 4×4 AT: RM116,999.20

    Auto Plus

    • 1.9L 4×2 AT: RM109,499.20

    Premium

    • 1.9L 4×4 AT: RM134,649.20
    • V-Cross 3.0L 4×4 AT: RM141,138.40

    X-Terrain

    • V-Cross 3.0L 4×4 AT: RM157,938.40

The D-Max is currently in its third generation, and the facelift brings with it a revised front end that is meant to promote better aerodynamic efficiency and improve cooling. For starters, there’s a reprofiled front grille that still retains the “fang-like” elements, while the insert for the large intake lower down has a honeycomb lattice design.

There’s also a new front bumper with black surfacing near sharper fog lamp cutouts, the latter with air curtains to send air out through the wheel arches. Another notable revision is the lightly tweaked hood and new headlamps, the latter reshaped and now with integrated indicators along with a different daytime running light signature.

The X-Terrain serves as the flagship variant of the D-Max range and is set apart from the rest by its black body cladding over the wheel arches, side steps and a faux skid plate in the front lower apron. The range-topper also nets you welcome lights on the outside as well as a seven-colour ambient lighting system that now extends to the front door cards.

At the rear, the new D-Max’s taillights get a more distinctive triple-tier look and the tailgate has been tweaked so there are creases at the top and bottom rather than on the sides. Moving inside, the dashboard layout is pretty much identical to the pre-facelift model save for new patterns for the seats and interior trim.

2024 Isuzu D-Max facelift launched in Malaysia – five variants; 1.9L, 3.0L turbodiesels; priced from RM99k

Other changes on the inside include a new e-Lumax multi-info display (MID) in the instrument cluster and a switch to USB-C ports (previously USB-A). The X-Terrain now comes with a larger 10-inch touchscreen head unit with wireless Android Auto and CarPlay, while the Premium and Auto Plus come with nine-inch version. Lesser variants get a standard head unit instead.

The updated D-Max in X-Terrain guise also gets better a new-generation stereo camera setup that has a wider field of view of 120 degrees (previously just 40 degrees) and can recognise vehicles ahead as far as 150 metres. This improves the Allsight suite of driver assistance systems, which include autonomous emergency braking that can now “see” more of what’s ahead and react accordingly – Turn Assist with pedestrian protection is also improved as a result.

The X-Terrain also gets rear cross traffic brake as standard now, while the around view monitor (AVM) has been improved and is included with the range-topping and Premium variants. The latter comes with more viewing angles and the version on the X-Terrain has a 3D view function instead of a 2D view in the Premium.

In terms of equipment, the workhorse Single Cab comes with halogen reflector headlamps, 16-inch steel wheels, a 3.5-inch monochrome multi-info instrument display, a single-DIN head unit, two speakers, vinly seat upholstery, manual air-conditioning, two front airbags, ESC, traction control, ABS, EBD, brake assist, hill start assist, hill descent control and two reverse sensors.

Moving on to the Standard, you get 17-inch alloys (255/65 profile tyres), bulb-type front fog lamps, bulb-type taillights, side steps, the e-Lumax instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch MID, a seven-inch touchscreen head unit, six speakers manual air-conditioning with rear vents, fabric seat upholstery, the same passive safety/assist systems as the Single Cab (including just two airbags), a reverse camera and four reverse sensors.

A sports bar and cargo tray are optional for the Standard, which either gets reflector halogens and bulb-type DRLs if you opt of the manual version, or bi-LED projectors and LED DRLs with the automatic transmission.

The Auto Plus is nearly identical to the Standard 1.9L 4×4 AT when it comes to equipment, but with the addition of a nine-inch touchscreen head unit, six speakers and a wireless charging pad.

The Premium improves upon the Auto Plus by adding an automatic function for its bi-LED projector headlamps, front and rear LED fog lamps, LED taillights, tailgate assist, 18-inch alloys (with 265/60 profile tyres), a seven-inch MID, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control (also with rear vents), black combination leather seat upholstery.

This variant also gains four more airbags for a total of six, front and rear parking sensors totalling eight, a digital video recorder (DVR) at the front, an around view monitor, a blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert. Just like the Standard, The Premium as well as the Auto Plus can be optioned with a sports bar and cargo tray.

At the top of the range, the X-Terrain builds upon the Premium’s kit list by sporting not just a more rugged exterior, but also a matte dark grey finish for its 18-inch alloys (with 265/60 profile tyres).

2024 Isuzu D-Max facelift launched in Malaysia – five variants; 1.9L, 3.0L turbodiesels; priced from RM99k

The range-topper also gains remote engine start, an ambient lighting system, a 10-inch touchscreen head unit, an additional driver’s knee airbag for a total of seven airbags, front and rear DVRs and 3D view for the AVM.

Driver assistance systems such as forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, Turn Assist, pedal misapplication mitigation, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam, lane departure warning, manual speed limiter, mutli-collision brake and rear cross traffic brake are only found on the X-Terrain, which also gets the Premium’s blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert.

There are five colours available for the new D-Max including a new Namibu Orange that is accompanied by Islay Grey, Onyx Black, Dolomite White Pearl, Biarritz Blue, Mercury Silver and Splash White.

  • Leapmotor International formed as Stellantis-Leapmotor joint venture; to enter Malaysia late-2024

Leapmotor International formed as Stellantis-Leapmotor joint venture; to enter Malaysia late-2024

Stellantis and Leapmotor have announced that the formation of the joint venture between the two firms, Leapmotor International is now complete as a 51/49 split led by Stellantis, following Stellantis’ investment of around 1.5 billion euro (RM7.6 billion) in October 2023 for the acquisition of a 21% equity in Leapmotor.

Headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Leapmotor International has exclusive rights to the export and sale of Leapmotor products outside greater China, and the partnership aims to “further boost Leapmotor’s sales in China, the biggest market in the world, while leveraging Stellantis’ established global commercial presence to significantly accelerate Leapmotor brand sales in other regions,” according to the brand.

Launch plans for the Leapmotor brand will begin in Europe with nine countries; France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Greece and Romania, beginning in September this year each with dedicated country managers, and will reach 200 points of sales by the end of this year, and this will grow to 500 locations by 2026, according to the company.

Leapmotor International formed as Stellantis-Leapmotor joint venture; to enter Malaysia late-2024

Further expansion for the brand will come in late 2024, which will include Malaysia as part of its roll-out in the Middle East and Africa, India and Asia Pacific as well as South American regions.

The Leapmotor product roadmap begins with the T03 hatchback and C10 SUV, both among a slew of models that were shown at the recent Auto China 2024 in Beijing.

Leapmotor International describes the T03 as an “A-segment urban boutique commuter car with B-segment interior space”, rated with a range of 265 km on the WLTP testing standard, according to the brand.

Given Stellantis’ positioning of Leapmotor as an affordable EV offering among the brands it plans to introduce – and re-introduce – to Malaysia, the T03 would be the more likely candidate for its market arrival here.

    Leapmotor T03 and C10

From 2025 to 2027, Leapmotor International has indicated the introduction of another four models to its line-up in that time, with an SUV in 2025, followed by two hatchback models in 2026. The year after, 2027, will see the introduction of another SUV, according to its timeline.

The other SUV models from Leapmotor shown at the Beijing motor show, which could form part of the roll-out plan, include the C11 and C16 SUVs. Of those shown at Auto China 2024, notably absent from mention in this timeline is the C01 sedan.

“The creation of Leapmotor International is a great step forward in helping address the urgent global warming issue with state-of-the-art BEV models that will compete with existing Chinese brands in key markets around the world,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares.

“Leveraging Leapmotor’s cutting-edge technology and products, along with Stellantis’ support in areas such as overseas channels, services, and marketing, we hope that users around the world can experience the exceptional driving and riding experience brought by Leapmotor products,” said Leapmotor founder, CEO and chairman Jiangming Zhu.

  • Chery Malaysia has contacted all 60 owners of Omoda 5 with defective rear axle, replacements scheduled

Here’s an update on the Chery Omoda 5 rear axle issue and recall. Chery Malaysia has now successfully contacted all 60 affected customers and scheduled axle replacement work for the cars at service centres.

“At Chery Malaysia, your safety remains our utmost concern. As of May 12, we’ve successfully contacted all 60 affected customers and scheduled an axle replacement appointment at our authorised centres. We will be updating the progress on the 540 detailed inspections for the following week,” the company said in a social media post.

Wasn’t it 600 units? A total of 60 units of the Omoda 5 in Malaysia were identified to be using the affected part, produced on August 15, 2023. Chery Malaysia then decided to cast a wider net and recall vehicles with parts made between August 14 and 17, totalling 600 units.

The root cause of the issue has been identified to be a miscalibration of welding equipment at a vendor. “Following a comprehensive investigation, the vendor reported that the issue was due to a facility upgrade during which a worn-out tip of the automated welding machine was replaced by a new welding tip. The replacement of the new welding tip resulted in a miscalibration of the equipment,” Chery Auto Malaysia VP Lee Wen Hsiang said earlier this month.

Chery has set up a website for owners to check whether or not their car is included in the recall.

  • 2025 Kia EV6 facelift – new looks, improved tech, larger 84 kWh battery, up to 494 km range

2025 Kia EV6 facelift – new looks, improved tech, larger 84 kWh battery, up to 494 km range

Just three years after the EV6 went into production, Kia has now pulled the covers off the facelifted model, offering mild visual updates and a larger battery that promises more range for the electric quasi-SUV.

The Korean carmaker has sold more than 210,000 units of the EV6 globally and, as such, has taken great care not to mess with the car’s distinctive low-slung looks. At the front, you get reshaped headlights that form a C shape of sorts, incorporating constellation-inspired “Star Map” daytime running lights – the same ones you’ll find on newer models like the EV5.

These are joined together by a revised black strip that is pinched in the middle, bringing back Kia’s “Tiger Nose” grille graphic. The bumper has also been redesigned with wing-shaped air intakes for a more dynamic look, while the side skirts on the standard model (those on the GT-line remain the same) have been subtly re-profiled to clean up the side profile.

2025 Kia EV6 facelift – new looks, improved tech, larger 84 kWh battery, up to 494 km range

Moving to the rear, you’ll find new “Star Map” taillights (still in a gently-arching full-width design) and the same wing bumper design at the front. Meanwhile, the GT-line gains new geometric designs for the front and rear bumpers for a sportier aesthetic, plus an illuminated front centre panel joining the headlights and intricate 20-inch alloy wheels.

Changes to the interior are relatively minor and include a more upright curved display panel (still with twin 12.3-inch displays), a retextured dashboard, visible ambient lighting and a grippier Qi wireless charging pad. Also fitted is a new steering wheel derived from the K4, with a flat top and bottom and capacitive touch sensors, the latter meaning you won’t have to keep tugging the wheel every time you use the Level 2 semi-autonomous driving functions.

New features include a next-generation connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) infotainment system that enables key vehicle functions to be updated over the air, along with advanced voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, fingerprint authentication and a new digital key.

2025 Kia EV6 facelift – new looks, improved tech, larger 84 kWh battery, up to 494 km range

Kia has also upped the convenience factor by adding walk-away auto lock, powered steering wheel adjustment, a 12-inch head-up display, photocatalytic sterilisation for the air conditioning, a digital rear-view mirror and a built-in dash cam.

Under the skin, the EV6 has been enhanced with the fitment of a new fourth-generation battery, increasing capacity from 77.4 kWh to 84 kWh. This bumps up the range from 475 km to 494 km for the long-range rear-wheel-drive model, which continues to produce 229 PS (168 kW) and 350 Nm of torque.

The all-wheel-drive variant, on the other hand, makes 325 PS (239 kW) and 605 Nm and delivers a range of up to 461 km. Despite the increased energy density, the battery pack can still be charged from 10 to 80% in as little as 18 minutes using a 350 kW DC fast charger, thanks to the EV6’s 800-volt electrical architecture.

2025 Kia EV6 facelift – new looks, improved tech, larger 84 kWh battery, up to 494 km range

Road manners have been improved through the addition of retuned dampers, reduced motor noise and increased body rigidity, the latter achieved by increasing the B-pillar thickness. Safety-wise, the EV6 is now offered with updated remote parking assist and lane keeping assist, as well as low-speed autonomous braking for parking. The addition of a front centre airbag and rear side airbags also improve crash protection.

Despite the new features and larger battery, prices of the EV6 have held steady in South Korea, ranging from 55.4 million won (RM191,300) to 63.15 million won (RM218,000).

Batu Pahat, Johor gets glow-in-the-dark road markings

A stretch of road in Batu Pahat, Johor is the latest in the country to receive glow-in-the-dark road markings, according to the Batu Pahat public works department (JKR), and the glow-in-the-dark road markings have been applied to a 300 m stretch of Jalan Paloh J16 in the district.

This comes after the public works department’s plan to list and evaluate the roads suited to the application of glow-in-the-dark road markings before the end of the year, as allocated in the 2024 Johor budget, said Johor public works, transport and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.

The application of these glow-in-the-dark road markings will be focused on areas without electrical wiring or which are unsuitable for electricity posts, as well as areas which are dark, along dangerous bends and on roads connecting towns.

The Hulu Langat public works department was among the first to apply glow-in-the-dark road markings for the district in Selangor, involving 245 m of road in the area. In February earlier this year, the Selangor state government said it planned to expand the use of these road markings to 15 other locations in the state.

2024 smart #3 previewed ahead of May 21 debut – first drive impressions of EV coupe SUV, better than #1?

3…2…1…Action! The smart #3 is the brand’s 2nd model in Malaysia after the #1, and the EV’s official debut is just around the corner now – specifically next week at the Malaysia Autoshow. Pro-Net had a media preview last week, where we got to touch, feel and drive the #3 at Proton’s semi-high-speed test track in Shah Alam.

We’ve covered the #3 since its world debut in April 2023, but here’s a recap. The #3 is a sister to the smart #1, the first model of the reborn brand (now co-owned by Geely and Mercedes-Benz, with the latter in charge of design), which now exclusively sells EVs.

The #3 sits on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform, which also underpins the #1 and a couple of other EVs under the Geely umbrella like the Zeekr X and Volvo EX30. At 4,400 mm long and 1,844 mm wide, the #3’s footprint is 130 mm longer and 22 mm wider than the #1. It’s not all extra overhangs though, as the 2,785 mm wheelbase is 35 mm longer than the #1’s. But the most obvious stat is the #3’s lower roof – 1,556 mm is a substantial 80 mm less than the #1’s height.

2024 smart #3 previewed ahead of May 21 debut – first drive impressions of EV coupe SUV, better than #1?

The latter is very prominent as the #3’s low and curved roofline defines the coupe SUV bodystyle. We’re familiar with SUV offshoots like the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and BMW X4, but to these eyes, the #3 shape looks better as it’s much less tall – they didn’t just take a normal SUV and shave the rear roof off.

Emphasising that near-perfect curve of a roof (broken up by a small spoiler) is a small bridge connecting the daylight opening and the rear glass – this also creates the floating roof effect. It’s not clear here with the camouflage, which will be off the next time we’re allowed to show you the #3. Then, you’ll also get to see full-width LEDs at both ends, as seen on the #1, and a Mercedes-Benz look that’s even more distinct here. If Stuttgart’s own EQ SUVs were more fun and daring, they’d look like smart cars.

Other premium and/or surprising design highlights include flush door handles, frameless windows and an illuminated logo, all of which are also on the #1. The latter has moved from the rear pillar to the front wing, though. The boot release button is neatly hidden into the ‘a’ of the logo, and there are smart logos as welcome lights. By the way, the #3 looks more aerodynamic than the #1 and it actually is – Cd is 0.27 versus 0.29 for the taller car.

2024 smart #3 previewed ahead of May 21 debut – first drive impressions of EV coupe SUV, better than #1?

Variants and powertrains mirror the #1. The Pro and Premium have a rear-mounted electric motor producing 272 PS (200 kW) and 343 Nm of torque, good for a 0-100 km/h time of 5.8 seconds. Top speed is capped at 180 km/h. The Brabus adds on a front motor to make it AWD, and the setup offers 428 PS (315 kW) and 543 Nm – this reduces the 0-100 km/h sprint time down to 3.7 seconds, a tenth quicker than the #1 Brabus.

As for what’s in the floorpan, the base Pro comes with a 49 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and the quoted WLTP range is 325 km, 10 km more than the equivalent #1. Both the Premium and Brabus get a 66 kWh nickel cobalt manganese (NMC) battery, which provides 455 km of claimed range for the Premium and up to 415 km for the dual-motor Brabus. Both WLTP range figures are 15 km more than the corresponding #1. That’s aero in action.

Along with its more athletic shape, the #3 is billed as the more dynamic sister to the #1, and Pro-Net brought us back to Proton’s Shah Alam test track (they also did the #1 preview drive here) to prove its claims.

In our recent review of the #1, we found the Geely-Mercedes EV to be a good landing point for those coming from premium ICE cars, as it goes around with a bit more heft in the controls and ride compared to typical Chinese EVs, which some might call ‘Continental feel’.

While ‘Conti’ is a positive connotation, some European premium brand EVs have a ride that’s too busy, which is at odds with the smooth and serene experience that EVs provide.

The #1 strikes a decent balance between comfort and dynamics, and while we need to drive the #3 in the real world to confirm the ride quality and NVH, the same should apply. What’s for sure is that the #3’s body has less pitch and dip in hard acceleration and braking, and body roll has been further tamed, giving this smart a more ground-hugging, stable feel. We said that the #1 has more than enough handling and grip for EV buyers – the #3 improves on this count.

Most EVs are more than fast enough, and that includes the single-motor #3. Unfortunately we started off with the Brabus and a banked oval, which made the subsequent run in the 5.8-second Premium you see here properly pedestrian. Without the distortion of the pinned-into-your-seat force and fake big V8 sound of the Brabus (I managed to reach the 180 km/h top speed), the Premium is a brisk EV.

A point we noted in our review of the #1 was the rather excessive energy regeneration even in its mildest setting, which might take some new EV converts by surprise. While regen is a vital part of EV driving, we wanted a longer leash, so to speak, as an option for the times when you’re feeling rich with range and want to glide. The #3 gets that option.

A note on the fancy-looking front seats, which probably don’t provide as much support as the looks suggest, but are still an improvement over the rather flat ones in the #1. No magic in the rear quarters – the reduction in headroom from the #1 corresponds with the exterior roofline.

We want to tell you more, and definitely want to show you more, but are bound by an embargo set by Pro-Net. So stay tuned for the public debut next week, which will come with more specs and details. For now, check out our review of the #1 and imagine a it with a less quirky/more universal bodystyle, an extra dash of Mercedes sauce and tighter body control. smart specialties – 22 kW AC charging (150 kW DC also beats BMW iX1, Mercedes EQA) and the locally-developed Hello smart app – remain.

No word on pricing yet, but expect the #3 to be slightly more expensive than the #1, which is priced at RM189,000 for the Pro, RM219,000 for the Premium and RM249,000 for the dual-motor Brabus.

  • GWM Malaysia to showcase Tank 300 and Haval H6 Hybrid SUVs at Malaysia Autoshow 2024 next week

GWM Malaysia to showcase Tank 300 and Haval H6 Hybrid SUVs at Malaysia Autoshow 2024 next week

In a post on its Facebook page, Great Wall Motor Malaysia has indicated that it will be showcasing the GWM Tank 300 and the Haval H6 Hybrid at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024, which takes place next week. Both vehicles have been previewed in the past, but this is the first time that they will be displayed to the public.

Initially slated to arrive here in Q3, the Tank 300’s Malaysian introduction has now been pushed up to Q2, which means that its market debut should be very soon, possibly even at the show itself. It is expected that we will be getting the non-hybrid 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine version of the boxy-looking off-road SUV.

Here, the powertrain offers 220 PS (217 hp or 162 kW) and 380 Nm in the way of output, and delivers drive via an eight-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system, the latter with 2H, 4H, 4L functions as well as front and rear differential locks. Earlier this month, GWM Malaysia offered an estimated pricing for the Tank 300, with the model expected to retail for around RM258,000.

As for the Haval H6 Hybrid, expect to see what should be the definite iteration for our market at the event. It was previewed here last year, but according to GWM Malaysia, the units shown then were not representative of the final version, with the actual kit and trim for Malaysia being that seen on RHD examples presented for viewing in China recently.

Specifications aren’t expected to differ much from that outlined during the 2023 preview, and so the H6 Hybrid will be powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine offering 150 PS (148 hp or 110 kW) and 230 Nm of torque, working in combination with an electric motor rated at 177 PS (174 hp or 130 kW) and 300 Nm to offer a total system output of 243 PS (240 hp or 179 kW) and 530 Nm, delivered to the wheels via the automaker’s two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).

There has been no indicative pricing as yet for the H6 HEV, but there should be some clarity on this next week when it makes its first public showing. The H6 Hybrid was originally supposed to debut here in Q2 this year, but its introduction has now been pushed back to Q3. The SUV will go on sale here as a fully-imported (CBU) model initially, but CKD local assembly is set to follow at EP Manufacturing’s (EPMB) plant in Melaka.
